Hi Mary, I am sending this to you directly as well since it seems you may not have seen my earlier message.
Have you tried my suggestion which was to see if typing style has been reset to the default which is standard typing. If this happens it may seem something is terribly wrong when you come to the passcode screen because you can touch the numbers, Voiceover will announce them, but nothing is typed because you are used to touch typing and would have to double tap or split tap the numbers in order to enter your passcode with standard typing. If your iPhone is being recognized by iTunes I also don't see why you would need to enter DFU/recovery mode. You could just connect it, do a backup and then do a restore. When it initially finishes the restore I suggest you set it up as a new phone to make sure everything works, you can always restore from your backup once you know everything is good. Sometimes things can go wrong on a phone and certain issues can be part of a backup so if everything is good when the phone is set up as a new phone and you run into issues again after rstoring from the backup then it's time to bit into the sour Apple so to speak and to just set up as a new phone and to redo everything from scratch, e.g. set up your email, download your apps, arrange them the way you want on the home screens and folders etc. It's a lot of work, but sometimes it can be worth it. When you say "the screen is dead" what exactly do you mean? Does not Voiceover read what apps are on the screen and can you not swipe around, open apps etc.? I tried several times to get it to restart, but every time, I get to that screen where it wants my passcode, because I have touch ID to unlock the phone. And I can't enter a passcode, because none of my gestures are seen, and voice over doesn't speak. It's like the screen is dead, although the phone talks and the buttons work. I have a friend who had something similar happen, and he has a 5S. In his case, after nothing was working, voiceover wasn't talking, screen seemed dead etc, he did the force restart. After that, voiceover came back. But for me, no such luck. I wonder how common this is. The folks at the store just said it's a dead phone. But I wonder. Is it some kind of weird interaction between iOS nine and VoiceOver? Has anybody heard of this happening to others, with or without voiceover? And while I'm at it, why don't earth does Apple want your pass code once you restart your phone and want to use touch ID? I mean, it's not like somebody can rip your finger off and use it and not have to know your passcode. It seems stupid. What am I missing?
