Hi Jen, I had this issue, and it turned out I had a message or two from Apple in my ICloud mail account, which I didn't even realize was a mailbox set up on my phone. If you hit the back button when you're in your Hotmail inbox, you might see the ICloud mail as an option, and then you can go in there and clear any messages you see.
