Here's part of the issue going forward though. Currently AT&T doesn't force you to choose one of their shared data plans. However my understanding from a area manager of AT&T's is that once the iPhone 5 comes out. They're going to adopt the same model VZ has. Meaning that if you want the upgrade price on a device. They're going to force you to switch in to 1 of these shared data plans. So, unless you wanta either pay full price for your devices or buy older 1's off of Ebay, etc. Now, I'm not sure about any of you. However, I don't have the money to pay full price for a new iPhone 5 when it comes out. So, perhaps none of us will have much of a choice going forward. Or, we'll keep using older devices. These are questions we'll have to ask ourselves. We'll also have to wait & see if they really adopt this model going henceforth. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Scott Howell" <scottn3...@gmail.com>

Raul,

Where things get incredibly silly is as you increase your data from perhaps 4Gb to 6Gb the base cost goes down but the per phone charge goes up. So, the only way these data plans make sense is for people with lots of devices. AT&T really did not take into account the families with two or three phones. The $70 for unlimited text and voice is not to bad I suppose, although the cost for text is so out of line with reality, but hey it is a cash-cow for carriers. :)

Hi, basically here's how they work. You get unlimited voice calls and texts. You pay for a base plan, which doesn't include any phones, but then you pay for each phone you add. As an example, if you go with a 4gb plan with 3 phones, you would pay $70 for the plan itself and $40 per phone. So, do the math. 70 + 120 is 190 plus tax. Now if you take one of their older plans like the 700 minute shared minute plan with unlimited text and mobile to any mobile and 3 phones, the cost is 60 for the plan, plus 30 for the texting, plus roughly 10 per each phone, plus the data on those phones. So, 60 plus 30 plus 30 for 3 phones makes 120. Now add data. Let's say 30 per phone for 3gb each. that's an extra 90 making it 210. So maybe going with the 4gb plan for those same 3 phones will save you 20. However if you have an older plan like the one paying 15 or 20 per month on data plans, then switching to the new data shared plan costs more.

Hope this helps.

Although, grin, perhaps I'm not really paying any more in the long run,
but I just couldn't figure that out for sure. I tried to wade through
the AT&T site to understand their shared data information, but finally
just got kind of frustrated and quit looking for right now.

In theory yes; however I have the old plan and tethering works.
I don't use it as I have zero need to do it.
I'll never sign up for the new rippoff so-called shared data plans.

I don't know. Verizon does it with their shared plan. It's a new thing.

Hi all.
How would I set my iPhone 4S as a personal wy-fy hotspot that I can
connect my Mack to? I have wy-fy at home but not anywhere else. Any
suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
