Hi Sieghard,

 

I did not read yet about the playbar. Can you give me an idea of the difference 
in sound I would have against my high end Yamaha which, as you well said, is 
not very accessible at all except for basic functions.

 

For instance, could I plug in my CD player into the playbar? How large is it? 
Does it include speakers. I have now moved to a smaller apartment and, in time, 
I would like to modernize and go smaller. I have 2 large Rega speakers, 2 
medium size Mission speakers and a subwover and all that takes a lot of space. 
I have to say that my set-top box is plugged into my sound system so that the 
TV sounds very good. In time, I would also like to get an Apple TV. Would it go 
into the Sonos Playbar?

 

A lot to think about. My sound system is about 8 years old and still working 
very well for now. Would it be a waste for now to get the Connect and then use 
it later on as you are using yours?    My bedroom is very small so I’m 
wondering if the Play1 speakers would be enough.

I guess I’ll have to find a Sonos dealer in Montreal to see if I can go and 
listen.

What you describe will work fine. The question is how old your Yamaha system is 
and your end goal. I bought a high-end Sony surround receiver in 2009 which at 
the time was $1,500 and since I already had a Sonos Connect I did exactly what 
you are planning to do. I had two front, a centre and two rear in-ceiling 
speakers hooked up, but no Subwover. 3 years ago I ended up caving in and I 
ordered a Playbar, Sonos Su and 2 Play 1 speakers as rear speakers and I have 
never looked back. My living room gained more space since my two front speakers 
are gone, my TV/stereo shelf doesn’t have a huge receiver sitting on it and I 
am now using that Connect player at my store and there is a lot less cable. 
Also, there is of course the fact that Sonos is fully accessible whereas my 
Sony receiver was useable in terms of switching inputs and basic functions, but 
a lot of advanced functionality was not accessible.

 

If you aren’t planning to get rid of your Yamaha receiver and speakers I’d say 
go for the Connect, but if it’s an older system you may consider buying a 
Playbar instead of a Connect and later add a Sub and two Play 1 as surround.

 

Using a Play 3 or Play 5 in the bedroom is of course a great idea, here you 
really have to decide how much you can and want to spend. It used to be that 
the Play 1, 3 and 5 were $199, $299 and $399 US, but now the new Play 5 jumped 
up to $499 so you could buy a set of Play 1 and put them into stereo mode for 
less than a single Play 5. You should maybe go to a reseller that sells Sonos 
and listen to a single Play 5 as well as a set of Play 1 and a set of Play 3 to 
decide. Of course if you set up two Play 1 or Play 3 in the bedroom you 
wouldn’t want to take one of them outside since each time you would have to 
re-establish the stereo pairing which maybe a bit of a pain.

 

Just remember that Sonos is extremely flexible and while you may not be able to 
buy all you would like all at once, you can just add to it over a few years.

Hi you two Sonos Experts,

 

I have a good Yamaha sound system in my living room with 4 speakers  and 
woofer. Since I am on a limited budget, my thinking is that I should first get 
a Sonos Connect to get the sound into that system and then get a Sonos speaker 
or two for my bedroom. One of these speakers, I guess, could easily be brought 
on my patio on a nice day until I can afford an outdoors speaker.

 

What do you think of my reasoning and, please make suggestions if its is a 
little off.

First of all, welcome to Sonos, I didn’t know you had bought into it, but it 
definitely is awesome.

 

As for the Connect, I understand that I could get any wireless headset setup 
and plug it into the RCA line-out or Optical out on the Connect. But 
considering that most of the wireless headsets I would consider are between 
$300 and $500 I really was waiting for a true Sonos headset. If Somebody who 
wouldn’t normally need a Connect has to buy one just for that purpose then it 
also becomes a pretty expensive headset solution.

When I bought my first Sonos products in 2009 it was 3 Connect Amp which then 
were called ZP120 and 2 Connect which were the ZP90 back then. They only had 
those players then and actually a set of stand-alone bookshelf type speakers. 
The Play 5 which started out as the S5 came I think in 2011 and I bought it 
then. Anyhow, I am still holding out for a native Sonos headset as I am 
convinced it will be coming at some point. My thought is that they do have to 
release a new product sometime and now that they have 3 portable players, a 
soundbar and Sub it must be something they consider especially considering that 
I am not the only one asking for  it. I once talked to a Sonos customer service 
guy and mentioned it and he said he gets people asking for it on a pretty 
regular bases and you find stuff like “ 
<http://www.imore.com/dear-sonos-please-make-me-sonos-headphones> Dear Sonos, 
please make me headphones! | iMore” when you Google around for  it.

 

What I really like about Sonos is the longevity of their products. While my 
Zp120 units are now called Connect Amp and my ZP90 is now the Connect, they 
still are essentially the same units even though mine are now 7 years old. It’s 
nice to see a company that makes some good hardware which is then improved over 
time with software updates. The only Sonos product which was a bit of a flop 
was the 30-Pin dock which they sold back in the iPhone 4/4S days. It was I 
think around $120 at the time and basically was a dock which acted as a 
stand-alone player and it also had a headphone jack. I still have mine but of 
course haven’t used it in many years since I don’t feel I want to invest in a 
30-Pin to Lightning adapter and if I really want my iPhone connected I have a 
RCA to 3.5mm cable plugged into the Connect Amp in my bedroom and I just plug 
it in there, but mostly I just use Airplay since I have an Airport Express 
connected to one of my other Connect Amp units to add Airplay to my Sonos 
system. That, by the way, would be one of my other very few items of criticism, 
I think at least the new players that were releaed in the last few years should 
have built-in Airplay compatibility and all 3 portable players, the Play 1, 3 
and 5 should have a 3.5mm headphone jack.

While a headphone jack on some of the units might be nice, I'm not convinced 
any new product is necessary, because Sonos already has one called the Connect. 
You can easily plug headphones into this, and indeed I have a device plugged 
into a connect that sends any audio from Sonos directly to my hearing aids. You 
can set it up as a room of its own or group it with another. For example, we 
have a Sonos PlayBar, sub, and two Play:1s in our living room for 5.1 surround 
sound. When we're watching a movie, I send audio to a Sonos connect as well so 
I get the sound of the movie straight into my hearing aids. But it could easily 
be wireless or wired headphones plugged in there.

Becoming a Sonos household has been the coolest tech we've adopted since 
iPhone. I love this stuff.

that connects to the Sonos system and acts as a separate player and it would 
allow users to plug in any headset or headphones they have from a cheap $20 
pair of earbuds to a pair of Sennheiser HD800S for $1,699 which is probably 
about as good as it gets. A product like this should maybe cost $250 to $400 or 
$500 at most if they put in really good components and if Sonos were to make 
only one product I hope it would be this one as it offers a lot more 
flexibility with headsets users already own.

I was just reading the reviews of the Sonos Play 5 and there were complaints 
that there was no output jack on this speaker? I was under the impressions that 
it did have a headphone jack but wonder if it was removed in the newer model. 
This is a real turn off for me. I guess I should have bought one earlier.
