Wendy, You cannot connect any external source to either the Play 1 or Play 3, only the PlayBar and Play 5 have external line in connectors; PlayBar having optical in and the Play 5 having stereo 3.5mm jack.
The Sonos Connect and Connect Amp also have both analogue stereo input and optical input, that is, two sources of input available to them.
