As usual there are more than one way to accomplish what you choose to do. I find it fastest for me to put the inbox into edit mode, check all the emails I am not interested in reading, tap on the trash button. Then you can go through the remaining emails and open them one by one and keep or delete.

What I usually do is read a message, use the two finger scrub gesture to go back to the list, then go through my emails and if one doesn't interest me based on the subject, I do the single finger flick up to delete and double tap to delete that message.
