The easiest way to do the scrub gesture is to keep your two fingers spread apart a little bit so your device does not think it is one finger. Now with your two fingers spread out just a little bit put them on the screen and make the letter Z.

What I usually do is read a message, use the two finger scrub gesture to go back to the list, then go through my emails and if one doesn't interest me based on the subject, I do the single finger flick up to delete and double tap to delete that message. I find it is much faster going through emails that way. I'm sure there are other time saving tricks out there, but that is basically what I do.
