The Nest works with a *lot* of home automation devices, supplying them with
your “home” or “away” status; it’s surprising how important this information is
for home automation.

The Nest gets the info from built-in motion sensors it uses, as well as from an
app you can install on the smart phones of household members. This info can
also be supplemented by the Nest Protect smoke/CO detector (the one which
connects to the AC powerlines, not the one which is battery only; these also
have motion sensors, and this info is relayed to the Nest Thermostats).

And yes, it easily interfaces with the Echo devices, although to get some info
you must use a third party skill instead of the built-in skill.

Nest is quite expensive, haven’t checked Honeywell, but if you want a less
expensive option you can check www.RadioThermostat.com. I have heard before
that the basic thermostat used by them can also be bought at Home Depot for
around $100. The current Nest thermostat (third generation) is double that on
Amazon.com. Of course the Nest does work wit Alexa and I don’t think
RadioThermostat.com has that integration, but I haven’t checked lately. I have
owned three of the Radio Thermostats for probably 5 or 6 years now, two are at
my retail store and one is at home, they are reliable and work, the app is
accessible and the only criticism I have is that they don’t and don’t plan to
implement Apple Home Kit support. I will most likely at some point start
replacing these with one that does offer it, but not at a cost of over $200
canadian, it is after all not that difficult to ask SIRI to open the app and to
then tap on the appropriate button a few times to raise or lower the
temperature which is done in half degree Celsius increments.

The Sensi is also accessible. I chose this device because it is, supposedly,
accessible with the Amazon Echo, but I have not yet gotten this part completely
figured out. The company will provide phone tech support but I have not had the
time to call. Using the app, I am able to control temperature settings and
switch from air con to heat; my needs are fairly basic although the Sensi has
several desirable features.

Do we have a list of smart thermostats that work with voice over yet? I know
this has been discussed before. I’m happy to go through the archives if
someone would post how to locate that thread and where to find them. If any
new info, please let me know. Thanks.
