My father in law no longer uses the email address which he used to set up as his Apple ID. He found he could easily change the email address Apple uses to communicate with him, so he did that because he reckoned his app purchases are tied to the specified Apple ID not to the email address Apple happens to use to communicate with him. This works now for him.
