According to some of the reviews on Amazon, the longevity of the retracting mechanism is not what one needs to worry about. Several of the reviewers said that after a little over a year, one or both ear buds stopped working, I wonder if it might have been because of having to pull on the ear bud to pull it out of its retracted state. I imagine that if this be the case, LG will do something to remedy this problem. It is something to consider, but if I wanted a set of them, it probably would not stop me from buying them, I would always be very careful when pulling them out.

Despite my belief they are trying to improve the design, I do have to acknowledge that anything with moving parts is more likely to break; this is the price I am w2illing to pay for a headset that does all the things this one does.
