Nearby is impressive and will get better. But, Blind Square does have some
transit information.
They book in with transit apps. I do not think they have the transit info
built-in, but I'm not sure.
For an all in one gps app, Nearby is quite good if you have the 4 GB of space.

Chris,
If you have Navigon, you also are using maps on your phone, not in the cloud.
Nearby Explorer needs over 4 GB of space as you have to download the entire map
system, you can't just download what you need.
But Blind Square does use a little data and you have to have data coverage for
that.
Nearby Explorer does just need GPS, no data involved.

If you have space on your phone, that ability not to be dependent on your
cellular company could be a big deal. It certainly was helpful for us last
summer when we were traveling. There are places where cell phone coverage just
isn't. If you got good coverage wherever you go, and a decent data plan, then
maybe it's not a big deal. The downside is you have to download all of the
maps. There is also an upside. If you are in a city where they have transit map
coverage, you get that. I don't think blind square has that, does it? I admit
I'm more familiar with nearby, and am impressed with the work that APH has done
and continues to do on this app.

Thanks for clarifying this Richard. That makes Blind Square more attractive. I
do not care about voice commands, or even dictation for that matter.
I was just looking at the description of nearby explorer, and found the fact
that one can actually download the maps to the phone and avoid using data while
navigating very attractive. It is a hard choice to make.

Cris

That is completely wrong. The only credits you would need to buy is if you want
to use the Voice Commands. That is an optional add on feature.
I have never used it.
I am usually in noisy places and don't trust voice commands in those situations.

Thanks David and Richard,
I am under the impression that one need to constantly buy credit to use Blind
Square. Of course my impression could be wrong. But if it is correct, I am not
in favor of subscription based or credit based apps. But as Richard said, the
turn by turn problem can be solved by launching another GPS app.
I like to hear more opinions before I decide which one I would choose.
Cheers,

Cris

They're not the same. If you want an all in one app for the blind, go with
Nearby Explorer. Blind Square does not do turn by turn though arguably its
point of interest database is larger. It might make more sense to compare with
something like Seeing Eye.

That depends on what you want from the app.
Blind Square is great for orientation. It will tell you street names as you get
to them. You can set it to track a location so as you get closer, it tells you
the compass direction and distance. It does not give you turn-by-turn
directions at this time.
However, if you search for a location in Blind Square, you can have it then
launch a turn-by-turn gps app to get your directions to that location while it
still speaks the streets as you come to them in the background. I often use
Blind Square and Google maps that way. It will also launch Navigon, Apple maps,
and now Seeing Eye GPS.
Nearby explorer is a turn-by-turn app that also speaks the cross streets and
gives a lot more information that can be customized. I believe its default
settings are way too talkative and distracting.
Someone else may give a very different answer, but I think if you are happy
with the GPS apps you have now, adding Blind Square would be the better choice
right now.

Hi folks,
I have quite few GPS apps on my iPhone. But none of them is specifically
designed with the blind users in mind. Nonetheless, apps like maps, Navigan,
and google maps are very accessible. But if you want to get only one app
designed with the blind users in mind, which one would you choose? If you have
to choose between blind square and nearby explorer, for example, which of the
two would you choose and why?
Cheers,

Cris
