I have the latest version of Facebook and iOS 10.3 on my 6S Plus and I still have "Message Friends" at the top right when I first open Facebook. I guess you have to be on the News Feed tab for this to be there. For me I have "Search" at the very top left (if I flick left from there it goes no further), if I flick right once I get to a "Clear" button and then another flick (at the top right) I get "Message Friends". If I double tap on that I now get a "Close Menu" button at the top left and I then see a list of my friends and Messenger contacts and when they were last active and if they are offline or online. On the bottom I have the tab for Messenger which will actually open the Messenger app, it is right in the middle and the third of 5 tabs although Voiceover calls them buttons, from left to right they are: News Feed Requests Messenger Notifications More
