I wonder what the apple stores will do with the SE phones that are left in their inventory? Do they sell them or send them back to Apple's headquarters.
Original message:
Craig,

My prediction proved true. Apple today discontinued the iPhone SE. it
has a boatload of SE phones that it needs to unload and carriers have
to meet their quota or buy phones that they can't sell.

Again, thanks to everyone for a lively discussion.

Craig, I understand your interest in keeping your provider. I live in
a really big city and the major companies all provide service here.
downstate, Sprint and T-Mobile service is spotty and some areas are

Sieghard, when I first spoke to my provider's sales rep about the $100
price tag of the SE, I had the same concerns as you. I asked him in
three different ways about whether there were hidden or undiscussed
costs associated with the purchase. For instance, at one point, I
phrased the question in words very similar to these: "Can you assure
me that the phone is paid in full if I give you $100 and that no
change to my monthly bill will occur as a result of this purchase?"
He assured me this was true. When I read your understandably
skeptical message, I phoned the manager of my provider's store and
asked him if I could mention the name of the provider on this user
group. I wanted to represent the provider accurately, I said, having
been a customer for eighteen years. He said yes, and added that the
provider, AT&T, is offering a limited time promotional offer for GO
Phone users in the northeastern U.S. of $100 for an iPhone Se.

Hi Craig,

I am not sure I totally understand how your provider works. You say
they
would sell you an iPhone SE for $100 and that is it? You could
discontinue
service with them a week later with no penelty?
You say there is no contract, but I somehow doubt they give you a $350
phone
for $100 without charging you somewhere to recover the additional cost.
How
much do you pay per month?
You don't of course have to answer, but I have found in 25 years of
owining
cell phones that if you get a phone at a reduced price the provider
will
charge you somewhere for that phone in addition to whatever reduced
price
you pay.
I am always amazed how people here get into these 2-year contracts
where
they get a phone for less tha it's cost were they to buy it outright
and
they think it's an OK deal. Then the 2 years pass and the contract ends
which means the phone is paid off yet the provider does not now
suddenly
drop the price of their plan by $20 or whatever amount would be
justified.
Also, in the uS more of these annual upgrade plans are offered than
here
in
Canada I think and again people happily pay for them and think they are
getting a great deal since all they pay is their monthly plan and yet
they
get to upgrade every year. Most apparently don't realize that again
with
these plans the carriers charge to cover the costs and the plan of
course
is
a lot more expensive than a plan they could get were they to buy a
phone
outright and look for a low-cost plan which doesn't include extra
charges
to
pay off a phone or, as in these annual upgrade plans, to essentially
lease
the phone.

Regards,
Sieghard

Thanks very much to the many members who posted replies to my question.
I
never thought my post would garner such a plentiful response.

Since I have for a long time been out of contract with my cell phone
provider of eighteen years, and since I wish to remain with them for
the
time being, at least, I don't want to consider contractual phone buying
with
anyone. The price of $100 is alluring since it comes with no strings
attached; that is, the phone would be entirely paid for, and my monthly
bill
would be unaffected. I am very partial to the small phone chassis, and
since I fully understand but am immune to the blandishments of phone
technology features that I do not need, the offer is indeed compelling.
Of
course, if I buy the phone and then the price drops after Sept. 12, or
if
Apple should come out with an advanced four-inch phone (which I doubt),
I
will kick my self.
However, I have done self-kicking before, and the pain wears off pretty
quickly. <grin>

The bottom line: I'm most grateful to everyone for their opinions, and
I'll
be curious to see what happens on Sept. 12.

I like my SE, but right now is probably the worst time of the year to
either buy an older phone or commit to any sort of contract payment
structure for one. By next week, you'll probably be able to score a
better deal for the phone you want. Be it a newer one or older one
since everyone and their momma who's interested in upgrading will be
itching to get rid of their older devices or businesses trying to
clear
out old stock.

I have both an SE and an iphone 8, there are times when I prefer to
carry a smaller phone, there's really not much of a speed difference,
it's definitely faster than the iphone 5 you are upgrading from, you
will notice a big improvement, if you like that phone size, go for it,
it's a great phone.

Hello, everyone.

I am considering replacing my iPhone with an iPhone SE since my
carrier is offering the latter for $100. I don't want a phone with
lots of bells and whistles, but I would like one that runs iOS 11X,
which the iPhone does not allow. Are there compelling reasons why I
should not upgrade to the SE? Thanks for any advice.
