Well, short of finding a bigger name on the other side of the controversy,
or something documented then it would seem that  the recommended way Apple
says to do this is correct as you did lose data.
The other issue was that the crash/reset was recommended just to restart the
phone and in going back through the thread, it turned out to be that the
culprit was that recently identified punctuation bug so nothing drastic or
risky was needed.

I used the method when an app appeared to have frozen my iPhone about a year
and a half ago. When my iPhone recovered, the app was corrupt and would not
run properly. I saved the app on my computer before I downloaded it again
from the App Store. The downloaded app was a different size (a little bit
larger, and functioned properly.

So, I spoke with a systems engineer friend who tested both methods of hard
rebooting using his sophisticated monitoring software on his work network.
He told me that the multiple press of the power button created an
instability which he said could negatively impact any app or data that was
currently running. He said the chances were extremely low, but he would not
use said method.
