No! You can still hit the edit button and select the ones you want to delete and then delete them all together. I certainly would not want my iPhone to automatically delete a bunch of messages just ecause I did a swipe and tap; it could be an accident. The swipe and tap deletes just the one you have selected and it is very quick.
