Hi Tom,
You probably have this set up as a POP account. This means you would actually have to reconfigure this on gmail first as you have to enable IMAP in the settings on your gmail website. Then you have to also set up Outlook 2003 to use IMAP, the instructions are available on the gmail website. I never thought it was difficult to delete emails before they introduced this new feature even though the new feature is nice. However, if you want to delete more than 3 or 4 messages at a time you can actually do it with fewer gestures when you use the old method. If I am in an email and find that after I read it I don't need to keep it, I just double tap on the Delete button right above the home key. If I see a bunch of junkmail or messages I know I don't even want to open, I just double tap on Edit, then double tap each message I want to delete and when I am done I double tap the "delete 5 or whatever number of messages you selected button at the bottom left of the screen. Never understood why people were asking for a way to delete all messages at once. I don't think most people always have a completely empty Inbox and if you want to empty out your Trash folder you do have that option, double tap Edit and then at the bottom left you have a Delete All option.
