HI Mark,

There may have just been other factors involved because Face Id uses infrared
and it should make no difference whether it's light or dark, here is what
Apple says:

Face ID automatically adapts to changes in your appearance, such as wearing
cosmetic makeup or growing facial hair. If there is a more significant change
in your appearance, like shaving a full beard, Face ID confirms your identity
by using your passcode before it updates your face data. Face ID is designed to
work with hats, scarves, glasses, contact lenses, and many sunglasses.
Furthermore, it's designed to work indoors, outdoors, and even in total
darkness.

When viewed through certain types of cameras, you may notice light output from
the TrueDepth camera. This is expected as some cameras may detect infrared
light. Some may also notice a faint light output from the TrueDepth camera when
viewed in a very dark room. This is expected in extremely dark settings.

I don't have an iPhone X or XS, but all I can say that while it may not be
absolutely 100% perfect, Touch Id also is not and in fact there are times when
I can't use Touch Id for a week or two if I do a lot of woodowrking or other
manual labour, my brother who has a working cattle ranch as well as a
contracting business running heavy equipment doesn't even need to bother with
Touch Id since his hands usually are to dirty or roughed up for Touch Id to
work and in his case Face Id would be a huge improvement. Of course I never
heard Apple talk about Touch Id and how well it works for people who constantly
perform manual labour like welders, carpenters, guys who work with concrete or
lay bricks etc. Then there are those outdoor jobs where it is necessary that
you wear gloves most of the time because of cold temperatures or for
protection, here Face Id again would most likely win out over Touch I d when it
comes to convenience and reliability.
Of course when you are riding a motorbike you most likely also wear gloves so
unlocking your garage door as you are approaching even if you have your phone
mounted where you can reach it might be a problem and in some cases a good old
little button you can push beats the more advanced technology.

Take care,
Sieghard

Subject: Another Great Face ID Failure Story, I Can't Get Enough of Them,
(Smile)

Hello Everyone,

As you may know, I am not yet sold on the reliability of Face ID.

A sighted friend of mine, a big, big big fan of Face ID is always telling me
how much he loves Face ID and how well it works for him; to which I always
reply, "Good for you."

Well, he recently purchased the 10 S Max along with a new garage door opener
which is supposed to be activated via Face ID, when he approaches his home.

Last night, he called me at approximately 11:30pm. Since it was so late, I
feared that he had some kind of family emergency but no; he called
complaining that he could not get into his garage using his iPhone because
Face ID would not recognize him in the dark, in his motorcycle helmet as his
bike approached. He said, to his dismay, even when he took his helmet off,
the phone would not recognize him in the dark.

I could not stop laughing. I don't know why he called me as we have not
spoken in quite some time but I suspect that he just wanted to vent to
someone who would care either one way or the other.

What made me laugh even harder was the fact that he had been so confident in
Face ID on the new phone that he decided not to purchase a remote control
for the garage door system.

He was so angry at Face ID and the phone that he could not let it go.
(smile)

He sent me a text, today, telling me that he purchased a remote control for
the opener.

Just another great Face ID failure story, I can't get enough of them, (Big
Smile).

Mark
