I don't believe it's possible to "step up" the way you're describing.
I think it would be a all or nothing type of thing.

Also, just to update, a reset of network settings didn't help so it's
looks like I will need to set up as a new device. I
'm not looking forward to that and so will wait until the freezing
problem really gets on my last nerve. <g>
