Carolyn, People with low-vision and some normally sighted folks sometimes like to use speech output, but they do not need it all the time. So, under settings, general, accessibility there is a speech section where you can turn on speak screen; then the phone or iPad won't talk unless you do a two finger swipe down from the status bar. This method would allow someone to have the phone read to them; without having to learn VoiceOver. You can even lock the phone/iPad, and it will keep reading until you stop it. So, it is a very good thing they are not the same. HTH, Richard
