Hi William, First, a few points:
1. I sure hope you didn't buy an iPhone 5 90% for barcode scanning, you could have bought an iPod Touch 5th Gen for that in a couple of weeks as it has a camera which is perfectly adequate for that. 2. No matter how good an app or solution is, you still have to find the silly barcode and that will never change. In itself that does not make an app such as Digit Eyes all but unuseable as your noteworthy techie seems to believe. 3. Any noteworthy techie has his or her opinions and if that person has a shaky hand, is unable to hold the iPhone reasonably straight compared to whatever it is your are scanning or anything of a similar nature, they will of course not recommend the app because they can't get it to work. They maybe a wiz in other things, but that means nothing. So, is Digit Eyes worth it? Absolutely. I have used it with good success many times although I have not used with custom labels which would probably make it an even better experience. The main thing is that you have to read their instructions and tips on how to find barcodes. It helps if you maybe have sighted help a few times to assist you in that because there are definite rules as to where barcodes are placed on product and while there are many exceptions it really pays off to know these rules and to know how to apply them.
