I have had great success with Digit Eyes. What helps is knowing where you typically would find a barcode and then getting an idea as to how far away from the barcode you need to be in order to ensure the camera captures it. I always suggest starting out close and slowly back away and at least with the 4S you would find six to eight inches is about right.
