It does take somewhat of a learning curve to find the bar code. That said, Of all of the apps that I've used, digit eyes reads it faster than any other app I've seen out there.
Agreed, multidirectional bar code readers, like the ID Mate products, is a lot easier, but comes with a much heavier price tag.
