I would recommend the 10R. I'm quite happy with the one I just got and the A12 chip should be supported by future iOS updates for years. Many changes were made first in the 8 so geting the 10R, you benefit from the lessons learned when things like wirelesss charging and other changes were first tried. Getting used to no home button really isn't a big deal and Face id works quite well.
