My main concern was for the time on the phone and the money paid, which would give the most mileage. However, your comment about improvements from the 8 help validate what I really want, which is the XR. One reason I want one, is that it will operate more like phones will be doing for a while. Yet, I realize, that by the time I have to replace, there could be major changes in newer models.
