Kelby,
The message below yours is from Sieghard about Apple and Steve Jobs, ... so I
am not sure which bug you are referring to.
If you are talking about the pronunciation thing with the word gun, that is a
VoiceOver issue as I'm using Tom Enhanced and it spells out the word gun, but
if I use a British voice, it reads the word correctly.
This is new as far as I can tell.

Richard,

It looks like this bug may actually only occur in VoiceDream with an iOS
voice—very strange, and I'll have to email the developer.

Let's not forget that Steve Jobs passed away on October 5, 2011 and that he
was quite sick for some time. I can't remember if he was still briefly in the
September keynote that year or not, but just as a reference iOS 5 was released
6 days after he passed away and while he was instrumental in the release of the
iPhone in 2007 and probably controlled many aspects of hardware and software
development for the 3 years or so afterwards before he got too sick, Voiceover
did not show up until 2009 so at best he was part of iOS development for 1 or
at most 2 versions afterwards. Back then there were a lot less devices and even
though they are Apple's devices, they still need to be supported. There were a
lot less apps and I would probably not be wrong in saying that many apps were
maybe less complicated, nowadays the sheer processing power of the iPhone
allows for a lot more possibilities. I don't want to totally give Apple the get
out of jail free card here and those who know me also know that I have
criticized Apple on many occasions, but I was simply making a case for the fact
that Apple in my opinion is certainly not abandoning accessibility.
For me one of the worst bugs in iOS 13 is that dictation is extremely
compromised if you are bi-lingual and maybe it's even worse if you are
multi-lingual. I speak German and English fluently and have both keyboards
installed. Dictation in German for the most part seems fine although I don't
use it as often, but when my keyboard is set to English it's absolutely
horrible because often SIRI will try to interpret what I dictate in English as
German and the result is pure gibberish. Sometimes I dictate a shorter part of
a sentence and it's perfect, then I continue and I speak a bit longer and SIRI
inserts what I say half in English and half in what it thinks I said is German.
Like I said, it's horrible and one of these days I will have to turn off
Voiceover and ask a sighted person to start dictation for me to see if this is
only happening when Voiceover is running. I somehow can't see why it would, but
if it isn't and all sighted users also have this experience I am surprised it
wasn't fixed yet and if it is Voiceover related then I have to start bugging
Apple Accessibility about it.

I agree. I would also like to add that Apple is putting more focus on
accessibility in their development frameworks. SwiftUI, Apple’s latest
framework for developing the user interface for apps allows developers to make
a lot of apps accessible without much work. I would say if anything, Apple is
focused on accessibility more than ever before. I will say that when Steve
Jobs was running the company it seems like there were less bugs when IOS
upgrades were first released.

Saying Apple is moving away from accessibility is complete nonsense.
First of all, iOS 12 even it's earlier versions were better than iOS 11 ever
was so I am not sure why iOS 11 seems to hold such a mystical value for you.
Second, iOS 13.2 still has a few bugs, but overall they are more minor
annoyances for most users, e.g. the fact when you delete emails focus goes up
to the back button etc. Yes, I know there are some more issues around braille
and hearing aids, but as I said, I mean for "most:" users. The problem with
Voiceover going away after a phone call is gone, third party keyboards again
work correctly and all in all iOS 13.2 is stabile, battery usage is good and
it's snappy and responsive.
The addition of Voice Control which probably benefits users with motor
impairments more currently than users who also need Voiceover to me indicates
that Apple's commitment to accessibility is far form dead or even slowing down.
Lastly, every year when a new version of iOS comes out there are initial bugs,
some worse than others and every year for the last 10 years which is how long I
have been using Voiceover (basically since it's first debut) I read messages
like yours where somebody says the new iOS is complete garbage and Apple is not
committed to accessibility any longer so it's nothing new, but it's getting
old. Accessibility is not going away any more, it's far too prominent of a
topic now with most major companies be it Apple, Microsoft, Google, Amazon or
others being fairly majorly invested in it as well as in its continued
development and improvement.

iOS 13 is by far the worst update to Apple software I've ever seen. I wish I
had stuck with iOS 11—there were some minor annoyances but it basically worked.
And, because I have to download updates over public wi-fi since I don't have it
at home, getting whatever the non-buggy version is will take forever. It's
clear that Apple is moving away from accessibility as a major concern and into
other areas. I hope other phones become more accessible so there are better
choices eventually.

Hi, I agree.

First thing I have noticed is that notifications continue to repeat and I get
stuck in the notification and have to flick away from it. It doesn’t matter
what the app is that sends the notification. It repeats and repeats until I
can flick away from it.

The other is a new issue. My default voice is Alex. But when I perform a
triple click, Samantha is the voice and I have to go into settings and go back
to Alex.

And, of course, there is the mailbox. But Apple supposedly knows about this.
The focus issues really aren’t fix. Maybe slightly better. But it is
definitely buggy still.

Having said all this, version 13 is not a show stopper. Of course, you have to
had version 13 with the iPhone 11 which I really like.
