That is not true, I just touch the App Store icon on my iPhone 8 and Voiceover
said “App Store, 1 update available”.
When I touched it a bit earlier it did not indicate that there was an update
and when I now opened the App Store and went to the “My Account” button, it
also said “My account, 1 update available”.
The icon still says how many updates you have, but I find it often won’t show
until I go into the App Store and refresh or I simply have to wait long enough,
if I don’t look for say several days it will say there are updates.
I have also experienced when it said, for example, “2 updates available” and
after I opened the App Store and refreshed the list there would suddenly be 5
or 6 more updates, if at that point I exit out to the home screen Voiceover
will then correctly announce the number of updates.

No there is no longer the numeric indicator on the app store app

I find that if I have auto updates turned on that they do update automatically

However I can also go in and under my account there is an update button and a
list of app updates possible att hat time.

Mike,

You're correct that the Automatic updates setting under Settings, General,
Software update is different than the one found under Your name, iTunes and App
store, and App updates found under the Automatic updates heading. The former
pertains to iOS updates while the latter pertains to your other installed apps.
I thought if you had automatic updates turned on for app updates, that they
would automatically download without any action on your part. However, I've
always had that turned off so I'm not the best person to ask. I don't believe
cellular data has anything to do with the automatic app update setting.

As someone else posted, it seems logical that if you have automatic app updates
turned on, the need for a numerical badge giving the number of app updates when
focus is on the App store icon would be unnecessary. However, that doesn't seem
to be your experience and I can understand the badge if timing has anything to
do with the update download.

When you turn on Automatic updates in, Settings / General / Software updates,
to update the iOS isn't this different than automatic updates in iTunes & App
store? From what I understand the iOS will update at night when you're not
using your phone if this is turnned on. But on the other hand, on my old SE I
had automatic updates turned on in, iTunes and App Store, but my apps didn't
update automatically. I always got the report that I had X amount updates
available when I touched the App Store icon. Or, is this automatic update
setting in, iTunes & App Store, only for when you're using cellular data?
Thanks much.

Take care. Mike. Sent from my iBarstool.

Holly,

I've been using computers too long to be a fan of automatic anything where they
are concerned. I prefer to have the final say on whether an app is updated in
case it breaks accessibility or does something else untoward. Folks on this
list are great at letting me know if an app update has a problem and I prefer
to wait a bit before updating although I must confess that I've been executing
that update all button more frequently than in the past because I've not
experienced any negative updates as of late. Don't let my habits influence what
works best for you, however.

Alan

Alan:

Why not just have automatic updates enabled? What is the disadvantage?
