If you bought it new, it came with batteries, but there is a plastic tab that should be slightly sticking out of the battery cover that you have to remove as it prevents the batteries from making contact so they don’t run down before use.
If you have any sighted assistance, or use Be My Eyes or Aira, you could also make sure that someone can see that a little light is on to confirm the power is on.
