Just FYI, backtap works fine on my iPhone 8 which has a home button.

button

one thing to consider is the new Back Tap feature. If you have a newer phone
without a home button, you could get the Back Tap double and triple taps to
activate the home screen and bring up the app switcher.
This would be a way around for anyone who has anxiety with the lack of a home
button. However, having made that jump to a phone with Face ID and no home
button, it's not that big of a deal. Yes, there was an adjustment and some
awkwardness for about a week, and then things were fine. Your mileage may vary.

Be well,
Wayne Merritt
