It has been awhile since I went through the merry-to-round with Verizon 
customer service, but, as I remember, you don’t want to punch any number for 
general info, but choose the option to ‘cancel my account’ and you will be 
connected to a live person.

Once you do get a live rep, they are usually very helpful.
