I have noticed that audible takes longer to load when I first open it. I have an iphone 8 running ios 15.7. generally audible works fine after it loads however, I have noticed that I have to tap on a book multiple times before it will open the book and start reading it. I had to spipe up and then back down to the book in the list double tap it then it played. Have you tried clearing the app from the app switcher or restarting your phone, or even logging out of and then back in to the audible app? That can sometimes fix weird issues that come up.
