That is correct, for anyone interested what I do is let thunder bird
download all the messages regardless of number and the number has been as
high as 5000 messages when I first installed the thunder bird program. Then
do a select all messages and hit the delete key then select the empty trash
command and that will clear all the messages from the google site.

>From what I've read, for messages to be deleted from Gmail they have to be
in the Trash folder, therefore, if you Archive them, they would not be
deleted. They would be deleted from your computer though, unless you
subscribe to the Archive or All Mail folders. I'm not sure about all
clients, but I know in Thunderbird, you can configure which folders you want
synced on your computer. They also shouldn't be on your phone unless you go
into your All Mail or Archive folder and then you'd just see the newest 50
messages in that folder. Again, this assumes you're using IMAP.
