Hi Neal and others. In the Kindle transfer specifically, when you arrow
to the entry and then tab once to the add button you are presented with
a file name edit box. This is like the typical file open selection of
Windows. After you upload the file it will show up in the device section
of the Kindle app. Now since your question is on downloading, what you
do in this case is tab once past the add button and there is a save as
button. Press this and the file you are selected on will save to your
last used folder. Again, the typical Windows file selection dialog will
open with the file name already filled in for you. Press enter to accept
the name and location and it will be in the folder you last used. If you
want to change the folder,k press shift-tab twice when you are in this
file name selection dialog box and you will be in the folder it is going
to save to. Press backspace here to go to the parent folder and if you
need to, again until you eventually navigate to the desktop. Again, this
is the same type of safe as dialog that is found in other windows
programs. Once you choose, my documents for example, press tab twice
again to reach the edit box with the file name and it should still be
there, provided you didn't accidentally change it by selecting an
existing file during your folder change trek. Now press enter and the
file will save to the location you chose. The next time you do this, the
same folder will be used. it sounds complicated, but it's not too bad
once you do this. Oh, and earlier i mentioned pressing shift-tab twice
from the file name edit box to reach the list of files in the folder.
This is true for windows vista and 7 users, but if using xp, then
shift-tab is only pressed once. This is because of that extra sorting
control ms uses when you are in an explorer window. I hope this makes
sense and that I didn't complicate it further.
Thanks.

David, For someone who does not use windows any more, those were very
good instructions. There is only one problem, Even though my device says
the book is downloaded, the tree view for Kindle which I arrived at by
following your instructions is blank. Interesting in that other apps
have items in the tree view, but not Kindle. So, you have gotten me to
the right place,. I think, perhaps, the Kindle app is doing something
strange here. I’m not asking you to tell me what is going on. You have
answered my question. But it is most curious.

I no longer use Windows, having transferred to the Mac in 2011. On the
Mac, the process is slightly different. As it has been a couple years, I
cannot provide exact instructions for Windows iTunes.
When you are in the main list, you down-arrow to the iPhone selection.
Press tab to get to a series of radial buttons. Each radial button is
for a different aspect of your iDevice. Since you want to move books
from an app on your iDevice to your computer, you need to select the
apps radial button by pressing either space or enter on it (I think).
You then tab to the information area. Tab through the columns until you
find the table which says something about transferring information
between certain apps and your computer. Find the app that has the
information you desire in the table. With the app highlighted, tab to
the button that tells iTunes to show the information in the app. Find
the information (book in this case) that you want to transfer to your
computer and find the information you select to tell Windows where to
save the book.

I’m sorry, I can’t get there with these instructions. I can find the
list of apps, but I have no clue how to transfer them other than by
syncing the phone and iTunes. Is this what you meant? If not, could
you elaborate please?
Thanks.

When syncing your iPhone with iTunes, go into the apps radial
button. You will find a list of apps which let you exchange files.
You can transfer books to and from the specific app to anywhere on

Hi, If I download a book directly to my iPhone, is there any way
I can keep it permanently. If I delete if from the phone, it
will likely delete it from iTunes assuming I have synced it. Am
I better off downloading books directly to my computer where I
can place the ones I have read in a particular folder? Or, are
there other ways to make sure I have a permanent copy of the
book? Example, is there a place in iTunes where the book is
stored such that I could make a copy of it?
Thanks much.
