I've only had this problem with ogg files that I forget are there. I did have a plugin that allowed for ogg formatted files to play in iTunes, but that was on my old machine. I haven't gotten around to installing it on to my curret one though. That aside though, Can't say I've had problems with mp3's getting imported.

Since it's a lossy format, converting to another lossy format would further degrade the quality of your media.
