HI Sieghard, Thanks for that most comprehensive explanation!
What I am trying to do is to enter a user name in the incoming and outgoing mail server fields. This is where I am now not seeing the @ sign; I just have the spacebar in that bottom area of the screen as you described. It's probably just a field where I can't use the @ sign! I am using an Iphone 4S running IOS 6.1 Thanks! Hi Debbie, Can you tell me exactly where you are when you are looking for the @ symbol? The fact is that in designated email fields, for example, when you enter the "To" address while you are composing an email, the @ symbol is just to the right of the space bar and to the right of that is a period, then you have the Return key. I suggest you try this out. Open the Mail app and double tap on "Compose" at the bottom right. Your cursor will now be placed into the "To" field. Find the Return key at the very bottom right, now move your finger slightly left or just flick left once. Voiceover will announce "period" Move a bit more left or flick left againand you now hear Voiceover announce the @ symbol, after that you have the space bar. OK, now double tap in the message body field. Now check your onscreen keyboard, once again focus Voiceover on the "Return button. Move left or flick left and you will find that both the period and @ are gone and you are immediately on the space bar which now takes up the entire area. Now touch and release the "More Numbers" button. Find the 0 at the very right of numbers row. Just below at the very right edge is the " symbol, one symbol/space to the left of it is now the @ symbol. In fact, here is everything you have from left to right in that second row (I am spelling out most of the symbols to make them read correctly): Hyphen comma Slash Colon Semicolon Left Paren Right Paren Dollar AnPercent At quotation mark In the bottom row in between the "More Symbols" button on the left and the "Delete" button on the right are most of the punctuation symbols: Period Comma Questionmark Exclamationmark Apostrophy In certain fields like a field where always the email address is required which often includes login fields on web pages, the @ symbol and the period will be on the main letters keyboard to the right of the space bar so it's easier and faster to find them. The same goes for fields where a URL is expected, you often have a Slash, period and even a ".com" key on the main letters keyboard and of course if strictly numbers are possible you may end up with a numerica phone keypad instead of the regular onscreen keyboard where you have to first switch to More Numbers. I actually wish developers would use this feature more often because in many apps like for banks or credit cards, it would make much more sense to have just the numeric keypad show up when it is necessary to enter one's credit card number, but usually the regular keyboard is displayed. Hi Mike, I'm beginning to wonder if you are correct in that the developer can determine what type of text field to use as now that I've turned on punctuation in the rotor and set it to some and and then to all, in both cases the @ sign appeared when entering an email address. However, in settings, when trying to enter an email address the @ sign is not there! Thank you! I have seen this a few times, I think it depends on what you are entering, I find when I need to enter an email address, it does show up. I think developers can indicate what type of text field they want to use.
