I understand about Siri and VO volume. However, when on a call, is there a way
to change the volume of notifications so they do not interrupt the call? I
always turn off VO during a call, but truly it is those FB and other
notifications that drive me crazy. :)

Hi Teresa,

Yes, the volume buttons adjust the volume for whatever is currently active.
If you want to adjust the volume for Voiceover, I suggest you start
Voiceover speaking continuously, then use the up or down volume buttons to
raise or lower Voiceover volume. I usually do this by doing a 2-finger swipe
up on the screen which starts reading the entire screen at the top and this
way Voiceover speaks long enough so I can adjust the volume easily. I also
have volume in my rotor, not sure why you took it out again because it
sometimes comes in handy. For example, if I am listening to a book or music
and I want to change Voiceover volume, I can turn the rotor to volume and do
so without having to stop whatever is playing on my iPhone. The adjustments
are in 5% increments if you flick up or down. I have my Voiceover volume
mostly at between 40% and 70% depending on how much noise is around me. A
few people mentioned that they accidently turned the volume to 0 because
they forgot to turn the rotor away from volume and then by flicking down the
volume got lowered all the way. I can't really see how this happens because
even if it's only set to 40% it takes 7 or 8 swipes before it's all the way
at 0 and as I am swiping I hear it getting quieter and quieter and I imagine
one should clue in at that point.

Volume for SIRI works the same way, if you want to turn SIRI's volume up or
down, just ask something which makes SIRI answer with a longer sentence,
then as SIRI is speaking, use the volume buttons.

I think Apple has done this very cleverly, you can adjust a few things like
the ringer volume and Voiceover volume with independent controls if you
like, otherwise the volume buttons adjust whichever volume you want when it
is active. To me this makes sense, if I am on a phone call and I want to
turn up the volume so I can hear the other person better, I want only that
volume to go up, not that of Voiceover, system sounds, SIRI, the ringer etc.

Subject: Volume Buttons as "Master Volume" For Adjusting Everything at once?

Hi, all,

I'm really confused about how the volume buttons work. I have ringer alerts
set to be adjusted with them. I also have taken VO volume out of the rotor.
However, it seems these things adjust themselves independently of each
other. I'd like to make the volume buttons function as a 'master volume"
control without messing up all the various levels. I haven't seen a toggle
for using VO volume with the buttons, but maybe i'm missing something. I'm
using an iPod Touch 5 with IOS 6, latest version.

Can someone help me cl ear this up?

thanks,
teresa
