If you update your phone through iTunes, there is a copy of your OS on your computer but locating it is not always a small feat.
-And, at this point, this is moot anyway. However, for future reference, whether or not you back up your phone, as long as you update your phone's software using iTunes, you'll have a copy of your OS on your system, so you can restore to it, should you need.
