Hi Les. Actually, the compact and high quality voices are both from Vocalizer Expressive. And Maria, the reason why Karen sounds different is because Nuance has tweaked her voice in order to make her sound more human. I wish they would've done the same with other voices like Samantha, Daniel, and all the other voices. I'm currently using Karen on both my iPhone and NVDA on my VM of Windows and when Mavericks comes out for my Mac I'll most likely be using her on there as well. I really like what they did with her voice.
