Hi Rose,

I find that especially with multi-function printer/scanner units you will get
what you pay for. If you spend $100 or less you will get a throw-away product,
at least this has been my experience. I bought an HP C310A All-In-One printer a
few years ago which at the time was one of a fairly limited list of Airprint
enabled printers and it was $110. I hardly ever used it and one day when I
wanted to print something it wouldn’t pull in the paper any more. I had a
sighted friend help me trouble shoot it and no matter what we did it just on’t
pull in the paper. It starts up and you expect any second the paper will go in,
but then after it goes on for a while it stops and gives you some sort of error.

If you only scan occasionally and your scanner still works, I would seriously
consider buying just a little black and white laser printer. You can get them
for around $100 or $120 with Airprint and all that and chances are it will
still print in 10 years. I have an HP Laserjet 1012 which is probably about
that old and while it’s USB only, it just goes and goes. Furthermore a toner
cartridge lasts forever and if you print very infrequently even the inkjet
printers of today are a problem as the ink may dry up. A laser printer uses
toner which is a powder which during the print process is heated up and
therefore it can never dry up.

First of all you have to answer the question whether you are looking mostly for
a document printer or a photoprinter. If you want a document printer then do
you need colour? A simple black and white laserprinter is the cheapest as far
as cost per page and return on investment as it will most likely last and not
give you any troubles for years to come.

You can even get good colour laserjet printers for less than $200 and it’s just
a matter of sorting through the large offering to see which ones support
Airprint which many of them do. But colour laser printers if you do have to
replace the cartridge are relatively expensive even though in the long run the
cost per page is less than for an inkjet printer.

Also keep in mind that while you may be able to do basic stuff like print and
scan from the computer, a lot of today’s all-in-one printers have all sorts of
touchpad panels to control and setup the thing. If you buy online you may end
up getting a printer which might be difficult to use in terms of making even
simple selections. On a basic black and white laserprinter you mostly have a
power button and not a lot more.

I have bought a lot of printers in my life and while I used to buy expensive
printers under the assumption that quality costs money, that is not necessarily
the case any more and you can get something in the mid price range which for a
colour laserjet printer is $180 to $300 and for a black and white laserjet
printer is $100 to $150. My last colour laserjet which I bought for my business
back in 2007 was $1,500 at the time and if I have to replace all 3 colour
cartridges and the black and white cartridge it sets me back $800 if I buy
original HP cartridges. But these cartridges print 6,000 pages and last me
about 3 or 4 years. Nowadays I could buy an equivalent printer for around $400
to $500 and as much as I hate it, even at that price it’s almost cheaper to buy
a new printer rather than to spend $500 to replace all the cartridges. I have
been buying third-party cartridges the last few times and they seem to work
just as good at literally 20% or so of the price of original HP cartridges.

Regards,

Sieghard

As I understand it, it needs to be air print enabled, found a ton on Amazon, so
many that deciding which one I may buy is a challenge, moderate use of scanner,
occasional use of printer. My two-year-old HP seems not to be working, it
scans most of the time but getting it to print takes literally 30 minutes or
more mucking around in control panel, then it may or may not work. I want
something that will last more than a year that will meet my needs, I don’t need
to print every day but in the past two months have needed to at least 10 times,
four of which I finally gave up and e-mailed to my boss, or a cousin who has a
printer that works, not really acceptable in my humble opinion.

Hello, you just need to make sure there is a wireless printer. In order for it
to print with your iPhone.

wants to work and recently not at all.
