Hello Alan,

I am so glad you received a new iPhone 5 via AppleCare.

Like you, I use wired Apple EarPods 95% of the time, especially when at home.
I have never had an earphone jack go bad on me but I have had no fewer than 7
Earpods replaced, during the past 5 years, because of the inline microphones
going belly-up.

However, when I'm out and about, especially in the company of others, I find it
easier and more convenient to access my devices via a single-ear Bluetooth
earphone. I am currently using a Jabra Extreme. I would not recommend the
Jabra Extreme if comfort is important to you. The earpiece that goes behind
the ear is extremely thin and, after about 15 minutes or so, really begins to
hurt as it digs into the skin. I have to continually move it in order to
prevent extreme discomfort. I really should investigate a new Bluetooth
solution but, aside from the physical discomfort, the Jabra Extreme works
beautifully and sounds so good.

As for clearing notifications, to me, it is a complete mystery. As I posted
earlier, I can clear notifications on my new T-Mobile 6 Plus with absolutely no
problem using the same VoiceOver gestures I used in IOS 7.1.2. However, try as
I may, I cannot get this to work on other 6 pluses that I have tested, even as
recently as today. Earlier today, I was in an Apple Store and demonstrated
this anomaly to one of the store managers and one of the guys at the Genius
bar. Both were as perplexed as I as to why my 6 Plus works when the demo 6
pluses would not.

I have changed every single setting I can think of on my 6 Plus in order to get
this bug to occur but, alas, I cannot. The only thing I can offer is that,
upon attaching my 6 plus to my PC for the first time, I did not set it up as a
new phone but, rather, immediately restored from a backup that was made on a 5
S running 7.1.2. Something tells me that when Apple resolves this bug for
others, it will create one for me and those of us who currently don’t have this
problem. Let's hope I'm wrong on this one, eh? (Smile)

As for the quality of the TTS, remember that in order to get the high quality
voice installed, you must (1) be connected to WiFi and (2) the device must be
connected to a power source. So, leave your phone plugged into a charger for a
couple of hours while you're connected to a WiFi and you will eventually hear
the High Quality TTS, assuming you've got it selected in the Rotor.

Hang in there, Alan. It may take a little time but I think you will eventually
come to enjoy iOS 8.x as it really does, in my opinion, enhance the
accessibility experience.

Your Brother In the Journey,

Mark

Subject: My iOS 8.1.2 Upgrade Experience and Post Upgrade Questions

I was fortunate with about only 33 days left on my iPhone 5 Apple Care that my
headphone jack went out on the right side of my warranty. So I got a brand new
iPhone 5 today from the Apple Store. But it came with iOS 8.1.2 which I'm not
sure I was quite ready for but I'm not one to look a gift horse in the mouth.
this is the second new iPhone 5 I've gotten under Apple Care and both times the
failure was with the headphone jack. Like many others on this list, I
constantly use earphones with my iPhone and I prefer the wired earpods because
I love the remote button for listening to books. Apparently, the electronics in
the earphone jack that interact with the earpod controls failed because the
remote and volume buttons stopped working.

I successfully restored my encrypted iTunes backup but was disappointed to
learn that data such as books downloaded in BARD Mobile, voices purchased in
voice Dream Reader, and other things I've no doubt yet to identify do not
restore with an encrypted iTunes backup. Can someone comment on why this is?
Are these apps not set up so that their data is backed up with an iTunes backup
or is this some sort of Apple restriction?

I know I've seen posts about notifications in iOS 8 but since I've been running
iOS 7.1.2, I've not followed them. When I tap the clear notifications button on
my notification screen, nothing happens. Is this still a bug? Is there a
workaround for clearing notifications?

I can tell a definite difference in the sound of VoiceOver in iOS 8 versus 7.
It sounds more as if it's coming from a well and does not seem as sharp at
least to my ears. Have others experienced this or is this due to running on an
iPhone 5 with less processing power? I also noticed that the word gigabyte is
pronounced yigabyte which seems odd since I would expect audio quality to
improve with iOS upgrades.

I'd love any help with my questions and also appreciate any comments regarding
similar iOS 8 upgrade experiences. I realize I'm late to the upgrade party and
please excuse my tardiness.
