A few months ago, I cloned z/VM 5.1 from our 390 side to the IFL side. No problem. Everything came up and I've been doing the Linux/Oracle thing.
I did a Q N and it finally dawned on me, all these service machines are running. (autolog1 and auditor brings them up) Many, don't make any sense without the 390 software. Time for some cleanup. But then, I realized that VTAM is up and running and doing well. Of course, no hardware is over there. It is connected to our session manager and so it provided multiple session support for my consoles (3 linux images, Maint, and TCPMaint). All mine. So the question becomes, how or if, VTAM is licensed on an IFL. Having a session manager is nice as I can swap sessions via keystrokes instead of haveing to move my hand to a mouse to get a different TN3270 session. Depending on cost, we might keep everything as is, or Drop VTAM and find an IP session manager, or Send all the consoles over to PROP and forget about consoles. Most likely, send all the consoles over to PROP. But I wanted to understand the licensing before decisions are made. Thanks Tom Duerbusch THD Consulting
