This is what I get on VMS V7.2 on a VAX:

$ sho system/noprocess
OpenVMS V7.2  on node SBNSLJ  14-FEB-2000 15:56:52.27  Uptime  6 00:48:28
$ write sys$output f$getsyi("arch_name")
VAX
$ create/dir [.1.2.3.4.5.6.7.8]
%CREATE-E-DIRNOTCRE, [.1.2.3.4.5.6.7.8] directory file not created
-RMS-F-DIR, error in directory name
$ create/dir [.1.2.3.4.5.6.7]
$
