What crossover cable? Serial, utp, twisted-pair, isdn, phone, usb,
token-ring, token-bus, parallel...

Is this the IP at the other end of the crossover cable? or the IP you got
from your ISP?

Is TCP/IP running over the link? Have both ends an ip-address in the same
subnet (10.10.10.10 and 10.10.10.11 for example)

Then you should be able to ping from one side to the other. If so, vnc
should work too.

OOPS, You mention XP, Sorry no experience. By default it has a firewall
enabled, have no experience with that...
