Its pure IP, it should work ok. ( remember netBEUI wont
work )

It just wont be able to use name resolution / file
sharing if the rest isn't setup. ( the windows specific crap )

This is of course assuming you set the IP, range and
subnets to match, try pinging back and forth with the
hardcode IP addresses... if you can ping both directions
then its NOT your network setup. its something else.

And also assuming he meant a Ethernet crossover, not
a parallel or serial cable..
