VNC 4 and VNC 3 are protocol-compatible - their viewers and servers can be
used interchangeably if required. All that you'll see is that certain
features (such as local cursor rendering) aren't available unless both sides
support them, obviously.

The username/password capability in V4 would be useful to us - do you know if anyone is working on V4 support on OS X ?

What is the problem you are seeing with the "piece of kit" & CotVNC / Java
Viewer? Is the kit supplying a Java viewer of its own or are you getting
one from somewhere else?

The piece of kit is AdderLink IP from Adder Technology.

Connecting with CotVNC I give the address and password, click on connect, then absolutely nothing happens - then about 3-4 minutes later CotVNC pops up the "closed connection" dialog* (the same one used if an active connection is closed).

If I connect with the built in Java viewer (VNC Viewer for Java version 4.0b6s, using Safari v1.2.3 on Mac OS X 10.3.5), then I get video, but now keyboard or mouse control.

In both cases, I can connect and control my PC running WinVNC 3.3.7.

*The actual dialog is "Terminate Connection. The server closed the connection" with buttons for Reconnect and OK.
