I have found that on web traffic, I need to change settings on our servers for authentication (to basic) when the customer is coming in through a system that is using a proxy (such as most of the cable companies). It could be that MSN is proxying their traffic inward (including SMTP) and this is the cause of the problem. OR some people here are using upstreams that are proxying traffic visavis MSN and due to that the necessity for SOME to change port settings.
