A colleague at work got out his calculator and figured out that if you divided 40T by 400 million Americans, that would amount to a debt load of approximately $100,000, each. That seems too high. It seems more likely to me that the debt load is probably closer to around 1 to 5 trillion. Give or take a trillion here and there. Shoot! My calculator only goes to 8 digits!
