Luboš Motl is a respected user on physics.stackexchange.com -- http://physics.stackexchange.com/users/1236/lubos-motl. From the answers I've seen of his to physics questions, he seems quite knowledgeable. In this instance he appears to reject the possibility of cold fusion out of hand, on the basis of first principles; he's obviously not the first capable person to do this.
The points he raises in his post are: 1. It's good to give unconventional science an airing, as long as the audience doesn't leave with the misimpression that such science has been given additional credibility in the process. 2. People are likely to assume that CERN has given credibility to cold fusion by hosting a colloquium on the topic. 3. Motl requires a theoretical explanation for cold fusion phenomena. I agree with him on points 1 and 2 and feel that point 3 is unwarranted, as someone alludes to in a comment. Motl's views are very strong. I'm not sure where he derives his great confidence from; perhaps it's an occupational risk of being a smart physicist. But I would recommend carefully thinking through any rebuttals.
