Tree dwelling primates with binocular vision have nearly the best perception of 3-dimensional objects in the animal kingdom. So people in general are good at that. People have varying levels of skill but when you ask several of them to do it, the average result is accurate. It is like using 10 thermometers of varying quality to measure a temperature. - Jed
