Okay, and if the default route doesn't get it where it's going, then ... ?
And keep in mind that each hop decrements the TTL, so even if the default route goes to a multicast enabled router, you just lost a hop.

You absolutely MUST have a route to send the multicast packets OUT of the device. Without the route, the packets go nowhere.
