And everyone has your exact configuration? Would "No" be the correct answer?
The OP has to insure that there is a route which covers the broadcast address. Without that, it don't work.
As for "sensible values", without understanding that the TTL is decremented once for each hop, knowing what "sensible" is, is a bit hard. "It works for me" isn't a useful answer. WHY it works for you, and how to make it work for the OP, is a useful answer.

Okay, and if the default route doesn't get it where it's going, then ... ?
The default configuration has the default route going out eth0, so we don't
need to create any specific routes.
Not a problem assuming TTL is set to a sensible value.
And keep in mind that each hop decrements the TTL, so even if the default route goes to a multicast enabled router, you just lost a hop.
